Carbon Consulting

In late 2007, with its commitment to corporate responsibility, KPMG in the United States embarked on an ambitious environmental program called Living Green. The firm began promoting environmental improvements and responsibility at work, home, and in the community.

With Living Green, KPMG is focused on achieving the following measurable goals over a three-year period:

- Reduce its carbon footprint by 25 percent
- Reduce paper consumption by 15 percent
- Achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification with 100 percent of new construction
- Increase alternative transportation by 5 percent
- Reduce waste by 10 percent

Through the Living Green program, the firm identified leading practices and established new programs and processes to support its environmental goals. These programs are being implemented at both the local office and national levels.

With KPMG’s commitment to sustainable business practices, Living Green will be a primary focus for years to come. KPMG has focussed on following specific activities:

Rethink

Conducting meetings virtually as an alternative to travel
Eliminating bottled water from conference centers
Promoting the use of stairs instead of elevators and escalators to curb energy use and get in shape as an added bonus

Reduce

Turning off desk and office lights when leaving the office or conference rooms
Powering down PCs and monitors when away from one's desk
Implementing power-saving settings on all computers
Scanning documents to a portable document format (PDF) to share electronically
Printing double-sided whenever possible

Reuse

Donating used cell phones to various charitable organizations
Using coffee mugs and water bottles instead of disposable cups
Promoting the use of rechargeable batteries
Collecting used office supplies (e.g., binders, pens, notepads, etc.) and redistributing

Recycle

Collecting used batteries for proper disposal
Using designated recycle bins and shred bins for copy paper, newspapers, magazines, plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and glass
Recycling used toner cartridges
